Looking for a pattern that is quick, fun, and totally wearable? Try these oversized crochet hair bows! They’re bold, easy to whip up (under 30 minutes each), and the ribbed stitches give them that extra bit of texture and flair.
Note: Not into ribbing? No problem—just work your double crochets as usual (rather than working into the back loop only) for a smooth finish. Example below!

Materials
- 1 skein of your fav worsted weight yarn
- 4.00 mm hook
- Hair elastic
- Tapestry needle
Stitch Abbreviations (US Terms):
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- BLO – back loop only
(Note: The ch 2 at the beginning of each row counts as a dc. Don’t forget to place one dc in the top chain of the ch 2 at the end of each row.)
Top Portion
Row 1: Ch 36. Starting in the 3rd ch from hook, dc in each st across. Turn. (35 sts)
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in BLO of next 34 sts. Turn. (35 sts)
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in BLO of next 34 sts. Turn. (35 sts)
Row 4: Ch 2, dc in BLO of next 34 sts. (35 sts)
Fold your work in half. Sl st along the short edge through both layers, placing 2 sl sts into the side of each dc for a total of 8 sl sts. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Turn inside out. Weave in the short tail (the one from your starting chain), and leave the long tail for assembly later.
Tails
Row 1: Ch 26. Starting in the 3rd ch from hook, dc in each st across. Turn. (25 sts)
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in BLO of next 24 sts. Turn. (25 sts)
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in BLO of next 24 sts. Turn. (25 sts)
Row 4: Ch 2, dc in BLO of next 24 sts. (25 sts)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Center Piece
Row 1: Ch 4. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, then sc in each of the next 2 ch. Ch 1, turn. (3 sts)
(Hint: To make sewing easier later, work into the back bump of each chain for this first row.)
Rows 2–10: Sc in each st across (3 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Assembly
Place the top portion on a flat surface with the seam centered and facing you. Position the tail piece evenly on top. Using the long tail from the top portion, wrap tightly around the center of the bow. Next, wrap the center piece around the middle of the bow. It should be a snug fit, so you may need to stretch the center piece slightly. Insert your hair tie underneath the center piece and sew the ends together with a whip stitch. Weave in any remaining ends.
All done! I’d love to see your finished bow. Feel free to tag me on social media — I’m @ewwgirlgerms everywhere — so I can hype up your creation!
