Crochet Starter Kit: 5 Must-Have Tools for Beginners

Looking to get into crochet? You’ve come to the right place! I’ve been crocheting for about six years now, and let me tell you—once you start, there’s no turning back.

Trust me, as someone who has accumulated a seemingly impossible number of hobbies, starting a new craft can be super intimidating. Walk into any craft store, and you’ll be met with an overwhelming wall of hooks, yarn, and tools you’ve never heard of. Crocheters on TikTok and Instagram make it look like you need ball winders, swifts, and stitch counters just to make a granny square. But do you really need all that fancy stuff right away? Nope!

Have no fear—I’ve compiled the ultimate list of absolute essentials. If you’ve got these, you’re ready to get hooking.

1. A Set of Crochet Hooks

Hooks are obviously the backbone of crochet, and there are a million types to choose from. As a beginner, I recommend grabbing a set of ergonomic hooks—your hands will thank you. Look for a variety of sizes so you can experiment with different yarn weights. (2mm – 8mm is a great start!)

2. Darning Needles (a.k.a. Yarn Needles)

Darning needles are those big, blunt-tipped needles you’ll need for weaving in your yarn ends when you finish a project. And yes, you will have ends to weave in. It’s an unavoidable truth of crochet. Get a pack of metal or plastic ones, and make peace with the fact that you’ll lose at least one immediately. I like to buy sets that come with a carrying case to keep these disappearing acts secure!

3. Stitch Markers (or, Let’s Be Honest—Bobby Pins)

Stitch markers help keep track of important stitches, especially in rounds or complex patterns. You could buy fancy locking stitch markers, but if you’re like me and constantly misplace things, bobby pins or safety pins work just as well. (Pro tip: Check your couch cushions. You probably have five bobby pins in there right now.)

4. A Good Pair of Scissors

Any scissors technically work, but a sharp, small pair makes a huge difference. Embroidery scissors or thread snips are perfect because they’re compact and precise. Plus, they make you feel super fancy when you snip your yarn with a flourish. ✂️

5. A Measuring Tape

If you want your projects to be the right size (aka, not accidentally scarf-sized when it was supposed to be a washcloth), you need a flexible measuring tape. They’re cheap, they’re cute, and they prevent you from guessing (badly) every time a pattern says “crochet until it measures 10 inches.”

Ready to Get Hooked?

That’s it! With just these five tools, you’re fully equipped to start crocheting and making magic with yarn. Don’t stress about all the extra gadgets—just grab some yarn, pick a project, and start stitching. You’ll be whipping up cute, handmade creations in no time.

Got a favorite crochet tool I didn’t mention? Drop it in the comments—I’m always looking for an excuse to add to my ever-growing crochet supply stash. 💖✨
